“Where are the Dog Play Areas at Dolores Park?
Good question.
Only a few of us know. For a map showing our DPAs go to http://sfrecpark.org/maps/DoloresParkMap.pdf
In 2005 the Rec & Park Commission designated two Dog Play Areas for Dolores – one on either side of the park. These off-leash areas are mixed-use and to be shared with all park users.
Our areas were to be indicated by signage and amenities giving the dog guardians a focal point by moving the dog water fountain to the concrete pad – where the 2 large green container boxes are near the bridge – and adding a kiosk with bulletin board, benches, etc. As this was not done most of you don’t know where the areas are.
The one on the south side of the park is between the service road and the paved path at top of the park, and between the Chinese pepper tree and the container boxes. The area on the north side is basically where “hipster hill” is now. The reason for this L-shaped area was to allow space for a practice soccer field that never materialized.
As I’m sure you’ve heard the park will be undergoing “rehabilitation” in 2012. There has been one community meeting with 3 more to follow. We strongly encourage you to attend the next meeting to give your input and to support the dog play areas (DPAs) we have currently.
Additionally if for some reason the renovation doesn’t allow us to keep these areas or they are up for grabs what other areas or suggestions would you have? If you can’t attend please send comments to my email before Thursday June 16th when the steering committee meets.
Community Workshop # 3 - Refine Conceptual Plans
Thursday August 4th 6:30 – 8:30 PM – This meeting may have to change locations, we’ll let you know.
